The General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam is Vietnam’s most powerful political official and leads the Party’s principal decision-making body, the Politburo.
Tô Lâm has been General Secretary since 2024, during which time Vietnam has pursued rapid economic growth by:
• streamlining the state bureaucracy;
• supporting large domestic firms;
• expanding infrastructure; and
• promoting strategic sectors such as AI, digital technology and green industries.
His leadership has also strengthened anti-corruption campaigns which have removed senior officials.
On April 7 2026, the National Assembly elected Tô Lâm President. The President is Vietnam’s head of state, has command of the armed forces, chairs the National Defence and Security Council, and exercises powers over senior appointments, legislation and foreign affairs. Tô Lâm now holds both offices.
